Second Annual Sawtooth Forum and Lecture Series in Stanley

The Sawtooth Forum and Lecture Series is back in Stanley this summer!  Sponsored by the Sawtooth Interpretive and Historical Association (SIHA), the Series will begin on July 3 and continue each Friday through August 21 at the Stanley Museum located on State Highway 75.  The Series will include speakers, lecturers, and authors from around the West.  The range of expertise and talent of the presenters is broad, but the focus of presentations will be on the western landscape and the rich human and natural history of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area.  Authors Ron Watters, Rochelle Johnson, Cort Conley, and Mike Barenti are among the Series presenters.  Specific presentations will explore the significance of whitewater, plants, raptors, wolves, and fire to local communities and the environment over past generations.  The special significance of the Salmon River also will be explored.  Participation is free.

SIHA President, Gary Gadwa, said, “We’re excited to be able to host this Series again to enrich the Sawtooth community, to provide more information about the rigors of life in this not-so-gentle landscape, and to generate more excitement and advocacy for this beautiful and fragile environment.”

Through evaluations, the approximately 800 people who participated in last summer’s Series urged the SIHA to host the Series again, and provided ideas for topics.  This summer’s schedule is responsive to those ideas.  The one hour Series presentations will be at 5:00 p.m. at the Stanley Museum located on State Highway 75.  Some Series presenters also will host campfire talks at Redfish Lake Amphitheater at 8:30 p.m.

The Series is supported by grants from the Sawtooth Society and the Idaho Humanities Council, the state-based affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.  Other partners helping to bring the Series to Stanley include the City of Stanley, U.S. Forest Service, Stanley-Sawtooth Chamber of Commerce, and Stanley Community Library.  The Series schedule and presentation details can be found at www.discoversawtooth.org.

The SIHA is a member-based, non-profit organization working in cooperation with the Sawtooth and Salmon-Challis National Forests.  It was established in 1972 when the Sawtooth National Recreation Area was established by Congress.  Its mission is to protect and advance the natural and cultural history of Idaho’s Sawtooth-Salmon River Country through preservation and education.
