Low snow and real cold ski trails
In the Sawtooth Valley, the shortest day of 2011 started out as the coldest as well. Morning temperatures at the Alturas lake ski area were around minus 20 degrees at daybreak. On Tuesday and Wednesday, fallen logs and sprouting saplings were cleared from some trail sections. However many stumps, logs, rocks, boulders and shrubs are still either sticking up through or lurking just below the surface of each and every trail, so please ski with extra caution, especially on the hilly sections. North Cabin Creek trail is now navigable for the adventure skier but very rough with a lot of sage brush marring the trail’s high meadow crossings. Some light grooming took place on all skating lanes and they look pretty good… classic tracks are old but hanging in there. 1/8th inch of new snow fell on Wednesday morning.
