Heavy winds pushed the Banner Fire northwest Saturday and increased the area to approximately 1000 acres. The fire is burning in steep, rugged terrain just west of Highway 21, 18 miles northwest of Stanley Idaho and five miles north of Banner Summit on the Salmon – Challis National Forest.

Highway 21 has been closed between Valley Creek Road north west of Stanley and Banner Summit because of fire suppression activities.

They are allowing one way traffic through HWY 21 with a pilot car and to expect 30 minutes or so of delay.

Parties with launch permits for Middle Fork of the Salmon are being escorted through the area from the Banner Fire Command Post at Valley Creek Road.

Resources currently working on the fire include air attack, air tankers, six helicopters, five engines and 11, 20-person fire crews (six Type I and five Type II). A Type II incident command team is being briefed at 2 p.m. today and will take over management of the fire Monday.

We are going to groom the Stanley Lake Overlook trail and Kelly Creek Loop on December 28th. Today they were planning on grooming out to Bear Valley. There still isn’t quite enough snow (only around 2 feet out there) and we typically like to see 3 to 4 to start grooming, but we’re going anyway. Both Williams Motor Sports and Smiley Creek are currently renting out snowmobiles.

Grooming Schedule:
Monday – Smiley Creek (they will be grooming in between our trips as well)
Tuesday – Stanley Lake to Bear Valley
Wednesday – Deadwood to Lowman
Thursday – Kelly Creek
Friday – Local Trail clean-up
Saturday – Clean-up
Sunday – Maintenance

Obviously, this will change, but we will try to update it as we go.

As for the roads, both highways are in good to fair condition with light snow (it’s snowing lightly here as we speak). The forecast is calling for snow all week through at least Saturday. Please use the 5-1-1 Idaho call line and the ITD website can help fill in any gaps in our reports. We will update again on Monday.

Have a happy New Year!
