The town of Stanley lies at the crossroads of two “scenic byways" at the very heart of Idaho's Rocky Mountains, so if you have the urge to venture down “the road less traveled” either of these routes is sure to satisfy you. There are no freeway off-ramps nearby but you will be richly rewarded for any extra effort it takes to get here.
Idaho State Highway 21 (Boise - Stanley) terminates here and intersects with State Highway 75 (Twin Falls - Challis). Either route will reward the traveler with wonderful scenery as you travel through the America that Lewis and Clark once explored. The approach from the south and the approach from the west wind along wooded river corridors, up impressive mountain passes and down into wide-open meadows with the majestic Sawtooth Mountains as your backdrop. From the east, highway 75 twists along the famed Salmon River where impressive rock cliffs tower over sagebrush hills. This is where “the deer and the antelope play” as well as the elk, bighorn sheep, mountain goats and coyotes to name a few. As you approach Stanley you emerge from the river and woods to a breathtaking open view of the majestic Sawtooth Peaks.
At the entrance to our town there once stood a rickety old wooden sign with the friendly greeting: “Howdy partner - come and sit a spell”. The sign is gone now but our friendly offer still remains. Stanley is what America once was, so “come and sit a spell” and discover for yourself just how good life can be.
